When It's All Over

There's one thing on everybody's mind: "When is this going to end?" I can't answer that, the C.I.A. told me not to; I can tell you what people around the world are going to do when the doors open.

No that is not a biker gang. It's my neighbors and I getting smoothies at the start of quarantine...a.k.a. where I wish I was right now.

“I feel Like I've been through this before.” - Vanessa

I interviewed lots of people for this post. The most compelling one was with Vanessa, she lives all the way in Germany! I write about her in my last paragraph.

The Interview

I asked four main questions during these conversations. One, how are you? Two, what have you been doing? Three, what is going to change most about yourself? Four, what is the first thing that you are going to do when this is over?

"Horrible." Whoaa. Talk about some bad feedback. Dear quarantine, people aren't thrilled with you. That answer came from Jack when I asked him how he was. Jack told me that he hates homeschooling, it's hard and boring. Jack is a third grader from Long Island New York. His state is currently leading in number of cases within the country. Jack's mom, Lonnie told me something very different. She said that it's really not that bad for her. She spends most of her time sewing masks, cooking, staying informed, and...homeschooling her third grade son.

When I asked what people thought would change about who they were, I found something really amazing. Nina from Miami and Sophie, Jack's sister, both told me that they were going to appreciate the little things more, and not take things for granted. Nina she says she'll enjoy soccer practice, when most times she would much rather just skip it.

Ah. Now for the whole point of this article: what are people going to do when they are allowed to live their lives again. Two girls my age said they wanted to do something crazy like jump off of a bridge or throw a rager. I'm going to leave them as anonymous. Most people, though, focused on their friends. Sophie wants to go with her girls to the beach and watch the sunset, Jack wants to go to his friend's house, and Vanessa wants to see hers too. "I really miss being around them," she told me.

Wait! Don't go yet. I want to tell you about Vanessa, she lives all the way in Hamburg, Germany and is a recent breast cancer survivor. She feels like she's been through this before because when she was having chemo treatment she was also stuck at home. "I can't tell which is worse: being stuck at home and feeling miserable, no motivation to go out, or being stuck at home feeling good and wanting nothing more than going back outside." She eventually decided that nothing is worse than being sick. Luckily for her, Germany is a little less strict with their quarantine restrictions. She is allowed to ride her bike around the park with her boyfriend, while in Miami parks are all closed to the public. Vanessa has seen this situation from both perspectives. Unlike anyone else I know, Vanessa can truly say that this feels like deja vu.

This was quite a fun post to write! I got to talk to so many people that I miss so much. As for me, I would like to travel with my best friends (and maybe grab a smoothie). Thank you so much for reading and have a great day.
