Reviewing True Winners: Little Women

Today is exactly seven days from the first movie review that we released. Unfortunately, that means that this series is coming to an end. Worry not for we are ending with a bang.

WARNING: This reveals key points in the movies, a.k.a there are tons of spoilers.

Little Women

Sophie’s Take: ✭✭✭✩✩

Little women was simply an incredible movie to watch. I always love movies set in olden times and this one hit it out of the park. It’s beautiful scenery and shots kept me enticed all the way through. From the beautiful coloration of flowers slightly placed among the set, to the cold, winter, snow that created such a great contrast in weather showing us the wide time span of the movie was great. And the characters were so incredibly well done. Their stories and lines were well thought out, that being so entranced in the film wasn’t hard to do. Some specific scenes truly stuck out to me, such as the reoccurring scene where jo is standing in a mellow field near the water. This scene is depicted in such beautiful and intelligent ways in which to display the different ages that the movie shows us of the girls. I always loved how the movie displays all the different places the girls ended up after they’ve grown up and how that differs from one another, giving us a great look into discovering their personalities. Overall, I think this movie was wonderful. It wasn't my favorite, and to me it moved quite slow, but on the contrary the scenery, storytelling, characters, and more were outstanding.

Scout’s Take: ✭✭✭✭✭

Little Women was just...heartbreaking. Jo, the protagonist countlessly fails in life, her novel is burnt to ashes, her writing is trashed by her closest friend, her sister dies, and the boy who has loved her forever marries her sister just when Jo is ready to marry him. Somehow, even with all of this loss, the ending manages to be so joyous. As she stands gazing at the printing press, hugging the first copy of her book close, one thing sprinted across my mind: she did it all for Beth. This, in my opinion, is the greatest part of the film, second best to the constant switch between past and present. Though on paper, Jo is the protagonist, everything revolves around the kind, quiet sister Beth. She gave Laurie’s grandfather happiness, as she reminded him of his deceased daughter. She gave Jo the strength to write the book Little Women even after she had given up on her literary dreams. Finally, she gave Amy and Jo the will to forgive each other even after Amy crushed her horribly. The direction, acting, and writing made this movie, in a word, perfection. I cried the entire time, every moment toppled with such powerful emotion, I couldn’t help it. It is common knowledge that the movie version is never better than the book; if I could be so helplessly in love with this movie I cannot imagine the beauty of the novel.
