Reviewing True Winners: Dunkirk

My best friend Sophie and I have begun watching award winning movies and reviewing them. From war, to love, we cover a lot of ground. Each of our reviews contains one line in bold, this line was chosen by the opposite person and named their favorite.

Once a day, for the next seven days, I will release one movie containing two reviews, two favorite lines and two overall ratings.

WARNING: This reveals key points in the movies, a.k.a there are tons of spoilers.

Dunkirk

Sophie’s take: ✭✭✭✭✩

From the second the movie started playing, I was entranced. The beautiful, and eye-grabbing cinematography of this film is overwhelming. It is so well made and the storyline depicted the history of Dunkirk so well. There was never a dull moment in this film, and the interweaving storylines that showed the different perspectives of people during Dunkirk is such a great way to depict this kind of story. Emotion was captured in every aspect; the acting was truly incredible. And the sound (or lack thereof) is insanely clever to show how impactful this event was in history. Along with being a great, and heartfelt story, I also learned so much from watching this movie. Overall, this movie was absolutely incredible and embodies the spirit of cinematography.

Scout’s take: ✭✭✭✭✩

Dunkirk never lost my attention. I could not look away. The acting was so good that I could feel the character’s pain through the screen. Who knew that the sailor’s son lying to the traumatized pilot could be sadder than Georges’ death itself. Not only did it make me smile but it made me cry. When it was revealed that the sailor had a son who had been killed in action, tears immediately formed, everything made sense. It made sense why he hadn’t given up on the fallen pilot and snapped when his son tried convincing him he was dead, as well as his determination to save as many soldiers from the oil as possible. Every aspect of this movie was deep and poetic, the music, editing, direction and acting. It touched on every aspect you would expect from a movie based on the tragedy and triumph faced at Dunkirk.

I hope you enjoyed the first review of the week, come back tomorrow for another great surprise.
