Back to School, or Not...

Was there ever a time in your life that you thought you might not go back to school? To some, it's a dream come true; for others, the alternative is their worst nightmare.

To understand both sides of the story, I have interviewed students from around the U.S. The United States currently has the highest amount of Covid-19 cases and deaths. With this in mind, schools across the country have closed down and moved online.

Eva of Marrietta, GA really wants to go back to school. Until now, that was actually an option. Her school's new plan is to start online on August twenty-seventh instead of the usual on August first. Then, after nine weeks they decide whether or not to return on campus. It's not all bad though, Eva says working online lets her go on more trips with her family.

Her sibling Max feels a bit different. "Sort of a mixed opinion for me, I despise the social aspect of school and personally I would rather stay home for school." Something Max does miss is being able to take notes and listen to teachers in person. If they had to go back, having smaller class sizes and mandatory hand sanitizing would make Max feel safer.

From New York, Sophie's view comes on two levels. One, starting high school is a big deal and would be nice to do at school. Two, the idea of staying home is a lot safer. Despite this, there is no confirmation of what is going to happen. She does think that the elementary schools will probably return since many parents can't handle homeschooling.

Mia is starting seventh grade this year and wishes to return to campus. Even so, she doesn't think it would be very smart to do that. Safety is a significant issue in her home of Miami, FL (Florida has the second-most cases in the United States). Though, going back would improve her grades and bring an end to her online dance classes.

Mia's brother, Adrian, also wants to attend school in the fall as a sophomore in high school. When asked if he liked online school, he responded: "No it sucked; it was horrible." One thing he did appreciate was being able to go fishing more.

Today is a surreal point in history. I highly doubt that anyone could have predicted this or the repercussions that came with it. If you aren't a student, I hope this gave you a taste of what it would be like right now. Now, I would say see you at school, but I think that would make me a liar...
